Linda Gail Sorensen was born May 8th, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Harm DeVries and Doris Thompson DeVries. An active member of the pep squad, she graduated from Highland High School in 1961. She then attended the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, where she graduated in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. While there Linda began dating her future husband, LeRoy Nels Sorensen, and was married to him for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Temple.
In 1967, the couple moved to California where Linda taught elementary education in Santa Ana Unified School District. Roy and LInda purchased their first home in Fountain Valley and started a family. After her first child was born, Linda took time off from teaching to raise six beloved children: Shawn Sorensen (‘67), Christina Hyatt (‘69), Carolyn Ching-Sam (‘74), Annette Finch (‘75), Mark Sorensen (‘79) and Susan Andersen (‘79).
In 1986, Linda returned to teaching at Lao Family Child Care. Within a short time, she was promoted to director, She continued her leadership and administrative roles working for Orange County Department of Education’s Child Care program. In 2008, Linda retired. In her retirement years, she enjoyed gardening, reading, spending time with her growing family, traveling, hosting parties, and serving her family, friends and neighbors.
As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Linda volunteered and served thousands of others in her lifetime, bearing testimony of the Restored Gospel along the way and teaching well past her retirement. She was heartbroken when her failing health eventually prevented her from teaching.
Linda passed away on December 31, 2022 at her home in Fountain Valley, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, oldest son, Shawn Sorensen, daughter-in-law, Elena Sorensen, and oldest granddaughter, Madison Sorensen. Linda is survived by her five children, 15 grandchildren, one great grandson, and her beloved sweetheart of 57 years, LeRoy Sorensen. She will be interred at Pacific View Memorial in Corona Del Mar on January 14, 2023.
Linda is loved and dearly missed by her friends and family. Her legacy of hope, hard work, selflessness, and willingness to serve will live on in her children and grandchildren for generations to come.
