In Sook was born on July 29, 1944 in Seoul, South Korea, to Yang Seok Seo (father) and Bu Nyeom Jang (mother).
Growing up she was the youngest of 8 children. She graduated from Duksung Women’s University in Seoul, South Korea. She married Dr. Chin Goo Kim and immigrated to the United States in 1973 to help support and raise her family in Detroit, Michigan. Speaking very little English and not have any family in the United States, In Sook worked hard to make a new life in a country she had never visited and made many sacrifices to provide more opportunities for her family.
She was a stay-at-home mother who was dedicated to her family, church, and volunteer work locally and internationally. She was actively involved in her Korean church community and cared deeply about helping others. She enjoyed flower arranging and always looked for opportunities to just talk with friends and visitors. The greatest joys in her life were her family, especially her four grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her daughter in law Sulki Kim and her 5 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Dr. Chin Goo Kim; sons, Johnny Kim and Charles Kim; daughter in law, Elizabeth McConville Kim; and grandchildren, Nathaniel Kim, Abigail Kim, Bridget Kim, and Shamus Kim; one sister in Korea, Young Ja Lee; and one brother in Korea, Won Jae Seo.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions in In Sook Kim’s memory may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (www.pancan.org).
