Judy I am so sorry to hear about Andy I always enjoyed helping out over the years that Billy worked for him. Andy was great guy and a lot of fun to be around. I know he was a true legion of his time. I know over the I have missed going to the races with him.

One of the true good-guy. He always had time for a quick "hello", no matter how busy or preoccupied he was. 
Family  man....business man...driver....official...champion...Andy did it all. Rest (and race) in peace my friend....

Hard to think anything could get the best of Andy.  His competitive drive was unsurpassed and he was plenty fast still.   His contributions to SCCA racing are as huge as the heart he rarely let people see.  They truly don't make 'em like this anymore.

The aforementioned "jabs about sound"...ah, Buttonwillow runs. I remember the first time they ran clockwise when I worked there, and he's hitting 105-106, I'm going "are you sure that's the right car?" That was where "Oh, I'm not gonna, I can't make sound no more" began...a little friendly banter that lasted until around the time I left for New England.

Though I mourn a good man and a great racer, I am glad to have been at least a small part of his legendary run. Keep on racing, Andy - we'll be rooting for you down here. (Just be sure to put a 90 on your car if you're going clockwise.)

Andy was just Andy. You knew he was there and if you needed help he did what he could to make it work without the fanfare of knowing he did it

For many years in the 1970's, Andy and I competed each other at race tracks in the West ,he in a Corvette and me in a 289 Cobra.  There are few drivers who "live" racing like Andy, and with the utmost support of his family.

I was sorry to hear the checkered flag had dropped on his last race.

Andy was a great man and will be missed. I have known Andy for the past24 years and was always open to listen to you. I will realy miss his jabs about sound. We all will miss the number 5 in the GT1 group and all of us who have worked The Beach will miss him even more. Andy and a;; those racers who have gone on before will be organizing races up stairs. I will miss you my dear friend!

Race weekends spent with Andy were some of the best times in my life.  The likes of him are not likely to be seen again.

I have raced and worked with Andy throughout my association with SCCA. Andy was always a gracious competitor and a gentleman both on and off the track. His enthusiasm and leadership will be sorely missed. 
God as called another to race in heaven.

Bill &I knew Andy for many years and are so glad we did. I remember when he was Area Director we dared him to come to Holtville so people out there would know who he was...and sure enough he drove out for the day! Will miss seeing his fast cars going around the track and most of all will miss the man. Goodbye friend. So glad to have known you.

What an icon and legend in our racing community. I can only hope that I'm racing like that up until the age he did. Amazing! I will miss seeing him at the track!

Andy taught me many things about life and hard work. The time I spent with him as a member of his race team traveling and working on the racecar are memories that I will always remember fondly. His impact was so profound on my life I used Andrew as the middle name of my son, Cody Andrew Lockyer.
He was already a legend 20 years ago and his legend will live on forever!

RIP Andy. I could never beat you but I am proud to have done business with you all these years. I was just down at the shop and everybody is still expecting you to walk in the door. You were the best and will be missed.

Andy and I had many great talks about technical things, racing, competition, friends, and life in general.  In the beginning he could trick me into believing most anything but eventually we shared the same sense of humor.  What a kidder.  However, smiling and laughing at his shop or in the pits gave way to focused determination behind the wheel of a race car.  What a competitor.  I feel lucky to have known Andy, to have raced with him, and to have called him my friend.

I saw Andy's smiling, well sort of, face every work day for over 13 years. I loved coming to work. I loved hearing all of his race stories from back in the day. He was such a trouble maker! I will miss when he asked about my family and sharing stories about them. Most of all I will miss not seeing him everyday.

Well said, Rene. I met Andy in 1974 at my first drivers school at Riverside. My impression was of a wily veteran who mastered the art of successfully racing Corvettes. Ultimately, he inspired me to win SCCA's 1977 A Production National Championship, driving a 'Vette. In later years, racing in the Toyota Super Production Series at Willow Springs, what stands out in my mind the most about Andy was his hard-charging driving style, especially considering his age at the time. He was the driver I most feared seeing in my mirror in the closing laps of a race. It's only fitting he was able to enjoy a sport he was so passionate about for 50 years.

Mark and I were honored to have known Andy and to be able to talk to him and to see him race!  We will always remember him

It's hard to imagine a world without Andy Porterfield in it!  He was a multi-faceted man; he could be cantankerous one minute, sweet and thoughtful the next.  He was never at a loss for words, not an opinion.  We had way too many discussions about Rush Limbaugh and other politicians Andy may or may not have liked.  I will miss seeing him running round around the Grand Prix like a chicken with his head cut off.  I will miss dinners with Andy and Judy - the lively conversations, good food and drink.  His smirk, his smile, his mischievous grin won't soon be forgotten!
