Mrs. Peggy Ruth York Baldwin, age 83, of Chewalla,TN passed away Jul 11, 2024 at Adamsville Health Care, Adamsville, TN. She was born August 14, 1940 in Chewalla to Thetus and Drewsyler Reed York.
Peggy graduated from Ramer High School in 1957. She married the love of her life, Erby Lamar Baldwin on November 27,1958. Peggy was a loving wife, mom, daughter, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She worked alongside her husband, Lamar on the family farm until his death in 1983. She worked at Shainberg’s and Walmart, in Corinth, MS for a number of years. The job she loved the most was her time at the Guys Post Office where she worked as the Postmaster Replacement. Ms. Peggy was legally blind so with a magnifying glass in hand, she memorized all the forms so she could fill them out quickly for her customers that she loved to serve and see daily.
Ms. Peggy enjoyed homemaking, working in her garden and yard. She loved to cook for her family and friends and having get-togethers. She enjoyed doing all kinds of crafts and making homemade things. One of her favorite roles was being Momma Peg to her grandchildren. She treasured her time with them and was ready in minutes to go to every school event, ballgame, graduation, or anything they were involved in.
Ms. Peggy loved her church and was a very active member serving on many committees. Ms. Peggy and her late husband served as youth leaders. They loved taking the youth on hayrides, to the skating rink, and having get-togethers with the young people. She was in WMU, leader for GA’s, Nursery teacher, taught VBS, served on pastor search committees, and the building committee for church additions and the parsonage. Her favorite role was serving on the social committee. She would work endless hours with other members to decorate the church and coordinate huge church events like Homecoming and Harvest Day.
Ms. Peggy was known fondly as the Card Lady. She had a daily goal of sending at least 5 cards to family, friends, or just people in the community. If you received a card from Ms. Peggy, you are a special person and she wanted to brighten your day.
Ms. Peggy loved her family, friends, community, and church. She would always say, “It’s never too late.” It’s never too late to accept the Lord as your Savior, to say I’m sorry, to start over, to make the most of this precious life that the Lord has blessed you with. Ms. Peggy was the biggest cheerleader for any accomplishment made by her family and friends. She especially rejoiced when any person accepted Jesus as their Savior. So today the last message Ms. Peggy sends to you is “It’s never too late”.
This is a quote from Mrs. Peggy to Will Shelton when he delivered some bad news to her as her PT when he realized after a major stroke in 2013 he was not going to get her back to her original level of function. Ms. Peggy said, “I will not give up no matter the circumstances. God has given me a precious gift of life and I will live every moment knowing that what I have left is a gift.” Will said it was a day he would never forget and our church family had the privilege of seeing her weekly because of her determination and faith in someone much bigger than herself.
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lamar Baldwin, brothers-Marvin York, Bruce York, John T. York, Travis York.
