Mattie Faye Booker

A Celebration of the Life of Mattie Faye Wilbanks Booker will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 11, 2025 at Memorial Funeral Home with Dr. Leonard Pratt officiating. Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 10, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and again on Friday from 1:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home. Following the service, burial will take place at Union Cemetery in Chalybeate.

Mattie passed away peacefully at her home on April 6, 2025 at the age of 78. She was born on March 12, 1947 to the late Hughey and Ruthie Wilbanks. Mattie attended Chalybeate School and was later a proud graduate of Walnut High School. Mattie attended Chalybeate Baptist Church and spent 17 years working at Rogers Supermarket. Her warm smile, caring nature and dedication to her work made her a beloved figure, both to her coworkers and customers alike. Her genuine connection with others and her willingness to serve, were defining qualities of her character.

A lover of nature, Mattie found solace in the beauty of flowers and the simple joy of feeding the birds that visited her yard. These small moments of peace reflected her nurturing and thoughtful spirit. Mattie enjoyed singing at an early age in church and especially found joy singing with her grandkids during holidays. Her greatest happiness came from the time spent with her family. Whether gathered for holidays, meals or just enjoying one another’s company, Mattie cherished the memories made with her loved ones. Mattie was known for her sense of humor and being a joy to be around. She was the life of the party and had a laugh that would put a smile on everyone’s face in the room.

In addition to her parents, Mattie was preceded in death by her sister, Kathryn English.

She also leaves behind her two daughters, Sheila Gardner (Mark) and Sharon Vanderford; her cherished grandchildren, JonMark Gardner (Taylor), Madelynn Thomas (Peyton), James William Gardner (Caroline), and Natalie Vanderford; great-grandchildren, Amelia James Gardner and Gardner Hank Thomas; sisters, Kaye Belk and Carolyn Cutberth ; and a host of extended family and many dear friends.

Serving as pallbearers are Mark Gardner, James William Gardner, Peyton Thomas, JonMark Gardner, Charlie Gooch, and Richard Still.

As she is resting in the arms of God, she will be greatly missed.
