James Richard Milam, age 98, died on December 12, 2010, Memphis, Tennessee.
He was born in Saltillo, Mississippi on January 16, 1912 to Lillie Belle Davis and William Eli Milam. He graduated from Saltillo High School and attended the University of Mississippi. Mr. Milam began working for the Boy Scouts of America in 1946, retiring in 1976. As a professional scout executive, he was responsible for nine counties and also managed the Yocona Camp.
Mr. Milam had a strong love for and commitment to his church. He served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Corinth, Mississippi for many years and was honored with the title of Elder Emeritus.
Mr. Milam belonged to the Keenagers Group and for many years he was responsible for organizing and directing tours that took the group all over the U.S.
Mr. Milam was recognized and honored by his community by being chosen Rotarian of the year in 1992 and Corinth’s citizen of the year in 2002
Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Don Elliott and Rev. Prentiss Gordon officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow in the Saltillo Cemetery.
Mr. Milam was preceded in death by Madge Beard Milam, the mother of his children; brother Eugene Milam; sisters Troy McCombs and Lelia LaGarde.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Florence Fortier Milam of Corinth; two sons, Bill Milam (Leslie) of Columbus, MS. and Bob Milam (Rita) Of Greenwood, MS.; three daughters, Ann Milam of Colorado, Joy Walker of Cordova, TN., and Kay Aguillon (Mike) of California; seventeen grandchildren; and sixteen great grandchildren.
