Celebration of Life with Military Honors for George Orlando Griffith Sr. are set for 2:00 P.M. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Don Elliott officiating. Burial will be in the Corinth National Cemetery.
George was born on January 27, 1921 to the late John Henry and Edna Blanche Thompson Griffith in Grove City, PA. George attended the Grove City Schools and was a lifeguard for three years at the city pool. After graduating from high school, he attended Grove City College in his hometown, where he majored in accountancy. On the college swim team, George set a school record in the 150 yard backstroke, a record that still stands today. George served in the Army during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. Following the war, he earned a Master of Business from the University of Pittsburgh. On May 8, 1954 George married Dorothy Cain. In 1958 Ohio Box Co. entered into a joint venture with three other companies to start a new paper mill along the Tennessee River just north of the Mississippi line. George moved South to start construction of the new business which was to be called Tennessee River and Paper Co. He bought the right-way and walked off the path for the new Corinth to Counce railway which was 16.1 miles of new tracks connecting the new plant to the major railroad intersection in Corinth, MS. During this time, Griffith’s family settled in nearby Corinth where his four children quickly embraced the new Southern home and became active in the public schools and the First Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Cain Griffith, daughter Mary Griffith, parents, grandson David Lamar Griffith, sister Clara Tueber.
He is survived by his children John David “Jack” Griffith (Joyce), George Orlando “Lanny” Griffith Jr. (Susan), Sally Griffith Rainey (Tom), William “Bill” Griffith (Tonya), his sister Evelyn Campbell grandchildren Sarah Hamilton Griffith, Kristen (Steve) Kuzia, Brian (Lisa) Griffith, John Griffith, David Allan Griffith, Misty and Larry Averett. Great grandchildren Katelyn Kuzia, Laura and Caitlyn Averett, Brenden and Cooper Griffith. Special caregiver Jinnie Peck.
Family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30 to service time at the First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall.
