Funeral services for Lawrence Edmond “Ed” Archer will be at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Foote Street Church of Christ with Minister Benny Baker officiating. Burial will be in the Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery near Corinth.
Mr. Archer died on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth. He was born in Corinth to the late Harry L. and Pearl Johnson Archer on Wednesday, August 11, 1920, where the adventure that is called life began. He studied and worked as an electrician while attending Corinth High School, and after graduating he moved to Tupelo, MS and opened an electrical repair shop.
On July 13, 1940, he married the love of his life, Ella Lea Baker, and for the next 70 years they practiced and lived their marriage vows every day. They lived in Tupelo until he was drafted in to the U.S. Army to fight in World War II and was deployed to Europe. He worked in the mail room while in Europe and after receiving his discharge; he returned to Corinth and began working for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier until he retired in 1977, but during his years with the postal service, he never forgot his first interest in life, being an electrician.
After retiring, he studied, took the tests and obtained his Master Union Electrician from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. After receiving this degree, he taught at the Alcorn County Vocational School for 20 years and was an instructor at North East Community College. Also he was an electrical supervisor for Bechtel, an electrical, construction, and project management company, that was located in Vicksburg, MS. He and Ella moved there for about 4 years as they built a nuclear power plant.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter Betty Howell and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Ella Lea Baker Archer; one daughter, Linda Hill and her husband Jim; four grandchildren, Holly Brown and her husband John, Dr. Sheri Hill and her husband Tim Quagliaroli, David Hill, and Susan Hill and her husband Juan Velez; and a host of family and friends.
