William is survived by his; wife, Melinda; children, Garrett, Joshua, and Michael; siblings, Rodney Skirvin (Lisa) of Coconut Creek; Nephew, Alex Skirvin; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Brenda, and Bill Skirvin of Pompano Beach.
William was born on September 19, 1963, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Brenda and Bill Skirvin. He graduated from Pompano Beach High School in 1981, taking classes in welding and shop. He married Melinda, in 1988. After moving to Coral Springs, Florida, William began working for The City of Pompano Beach and then The Broward Sherriff’s Office as a police officer and detective. The couple welcomed 2 children into their home and William set about teaching them how to repair and build hot rods. His children remember him as a talented police officer/detective, who loved to share his stories of his adventures at work. He encouraged their creativity, often dressing up with them as characters in their play and making the best costumes for all of them to wear. William spent a total of 23 years on the force, with most of the years spent in vice and narcotics, before retiring in 2012.
William was accomplished at all things hot rods and often worked for hours fabricating parts for his hot rods, building engines, and completing body work and paint. His hot rod projects were featured in magazines and were the recipients of awards. William was also a gifted writer. He loved to share his police reports, which were often a work of art. He was an individual who loved music and old television shows. He played the bass for many years and could have made that a profession if he chose to do so. He was a man of many talents. William had a tough exterior that hid a tender heart. It was hard for most people to get through that tough exterior, but if you could, it opened a whole other facet, that only his closest friends and family was able to enjoy. William loved to decorate and had a great eye for home and car fashion. He chose the best colors and somehow knew what the upcoming trend was way before anyone else.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1pm on May 28, 2022, at The Pentecostals of Cooper City-5200 South Flamingo Road. Reverend Mark Hattabaugh will officiate the ceremony.
