Michael J. Borrelli Sr. died peacefully in his home, surrounded by loved ones, on May 3, 2023 at 10:13 am. He was 92 years old and lived a full and fascinating life. He was preceded in death by his brother Pasquale and first wife Madeline. He leaves behind his wife, Elizabeth, his sister Anna Venditti, his 7 adult children, Jean Marie Barber (Bruce), Joseph (Victoria), Michael Jr. (Lisa), Mary, Madeline Meeker (Larry), Benny (Amy) and Michael III (Doreen). He was blessed with loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a number of "adopted" chosen family members who will all miss him dearly.
He was born on December 29, 1930 in the Bronx, NY to parents Giuseppe and Maria (nee Ritucci). In 1947, as a teenager, he worked as a baker in a pastry shop. In 1951, he was drafted into the Army and served in Germany as a cook. After an honorable discharge, he returned to his job at the pastry shop.
While working one day, he heard on the radio about job openings at the NYPD. He decided to pursue a career and applied to be a Police Officer. They told him he was too skinny, so he bulked up and kept applying. He ended up working at the NYPD for 19 years, attaining the rank of 2nd grade Detective working in Harlem with his partner Robert (Bob) Davis. When he retired from the force, he moved to Denver, Colorado and opened an Italian Restaurant. His time in Colorado became a True-Crime Documentary called: "Between Black & Blue".
After Colorado, he moved to Florida with Elizabeth and became a Police Officer again. He joined the retired NY Police Officers club in Florida that happened to be aptly named the 10-13 club, a police radio code indicating “Officer Needs Assistance”. He devoted himself to the club, which helps retired officers fight for benefits, and served as the club president in 1985, 1995 & 1996.
When he retired from the police force a second time, he worked as a Private Investigator for a prestigious Miami law firm. From there, he opened his own Private Investigative Agency until retiring to spend time with family.
Throughout his life, he taught us how to live life fully, with passion, joy, and love. Friends and family were cared for deeply and were always welcomed with open arms. He was a man of great strength, compassion, and a wonderful positive attitude that is rare to find. His absence will be deeply felt and he will be in our hearts forever.
In Lieu of Flowers donations to the Tunnels to Towers T2T.org in Michael's name would be appericated.
