VAN LENGEN, JANE, age 71, of Tamarac, Florida fell victim to cancer and passed away at her Tamarac home on March 22, 2016 surrounded by family and friends. She was diagnosed with a rare sarcoma cancer in October 2015. Previously she developed breast cancer in 1986 resulting in a mastectomy and had a recurrence in 1993 at which time she underwent a stem cell transplant. Jane was born in Syracuse , NY on August 4, 1944 and grew up in Liverpool, NY, graduating from Liverpool High School in 1962. After attending Bucknell University, the alma mater of her great uncle, Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher, Christy Mathewson, who played for McGraw’s Giants from 1900-1916, and Syracuse University’s University College, she worked as a Customer Service Representative for Niagara Mohawk, now National Grid, prior to moving to Florida in 1969. The following year she was employed in the same capacity with Florida Power and Light, now NextEra Energy, and retired in 1993 as Supervisor of Customer Service. Subsequent to her retirement, Jane worked part-time at a local branch of Bank of America and also did volunteer work for several years at the Coral Door Thrift Store in Pompano Beach, Florida. Jane’s hobbies included bowling for which she received honors and awards, collecting dachshunds of which she had an extensive number of displayed on shelves throughout her home, gathering seashells with family and friends on Sanibel Island, the seashell capital of the world, located on Florida’s west coast in the St. Petersburg/Sarasota area, family vacations with relatives in Indian Lake, NY and the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. In her younger years, Jane thoroughly enjoyed travel, both domestic and international, with family and neighbors. Jane is survived by her brother, William Van Lengen of Deerfield Beach, FL Cousins, Joan Everson of Kirkville, NY, Diane Duffy of Clay, NY, George Everson of Long Island, NY, Albert Rimbach of Ashfield, MA, Lynne Mathewson of Shelbourne, MA and several first cousins twice removed. She is also survived by many dear friends and her beloved pet miniature dachshund, Lizzie. A memoral service will be held at the KRAEER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 1655 University Drive, Coral Springs, FL, on Wednesday, March 30, 2016. Memorial gathering from 1PM to 2 PM with a memorial service at 2 PM. Charitable contributions in Jane’s name could be made to: The Humane Society, Make a Wish Foundation, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Vitas Hospice Health Care, or the Liverpool Public Library. Burial will take place in Syracuse, NY.
