Reverend Dr. James W. Colvert Sr.,of Coral Springs, FL passed away peacefully July 22, 2011. He was born September 21, 1935 in Cedar Cove, Alabama to the late James Pasco and Evelyn Colvert. He received a PhD from Trinity College, TX; a M.Div from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, KY; a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Birmingham Southern college, Birmingham, AL and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. A retired Presbyterian minister, he served churches in Alabama, Indiana and Florida. He taught Philsophy and Religion at Broward College for over 30 years. He was active in financial devleopment of South Florida Council Boy Scouts of America, Nova Southeastern University and Florida State Music Teachers Foundation. An Eagle Scout and recipient of the Silver Beaver award, he was involved in the South Florida Council Boy Scouts for many years.
Dr. Colvert was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve and had the honor of serving as Chaplain to Presidents Gerald Ford and richard Nixon while they participated in the Inverrary Golf Classic.
Dr. Colvert is survived by his wife, Sue Bentley Colvert; his children, Catherine Harrison and her husband, Pierre of Charlotte, NC, James W. Colvert Jr. and his fiance, Elizabeth West of Live Oak, FL, Anthony M. Colvert and his wife, Lydia of Coral Springs; his grandchldren, David L. Colvert and his wife, Jennifer of Baltimore, MD, Dawn I. Colvert of Coral Springs, Mary Cristina Harrison of Charlotte, NC; his great grandson, Jassant Colvert of Baltimore, MD; his sister, Martha Vaughan of Spartanburg, SC, nieces and nephew Leigh Anne Clifton of Aiken, SC, Laura Lowe of Spartanburg, SC and Patrick Lowe of Wichita Falls, TX.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Pompano Beach on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 7:00pm with the Reverend Jack Noble officiating; a reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of The Reverend Dr. James W.
