William Garrett Thompson

William Garrett Thompson, of Copperas Cove, passed away on February 3, 2025 at the age of 30 from injuries sustained in a tragic car accident in Odessa, Texas.

William was born September 1, 1994, in Austin, Texas. The youngest of his brothers, William’s addition to the family was a welcome surprise. William spent all of his formative years in Copperas Cove where he attended school but loved sports including football, baseball, skateboarding, hunting, and fishing.

After high school, William looked for a profession that suited him and, after a stint at a technical school, settled on welding which sent him out to Midland/Odessa to work on pipelines. A job that let him be outside, work with his hands, and make lifelong friends. He continued that work until his passing.

William’s time with us was far too brief, but in that time, William made an impact on everyone around him even when he thought he was simply doing what needed to be done because William knew when it was time to work, but, more importantly, he knew when spending time with his friends and family was more important. Sometimes it was something big like inviting a friend out to Hawai’i to go parasailing or going out of his way to make sure his friends had a way to pay their bills even if it meant struggling to pay his, but so many more times it was the simple things like prioritizing a friend’s daughter’s birthdays or just staying up talking over a few beers until the sun came up and everything felt just a little bit easier.

William started life as the baby of the family and the one everyone watched out for. By the time William left us, he was a brother to his friends and the one who spent his time watching out for everyone else. His love and laughter will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

William is survived by his mother, Linda Sue Thompson of Copperas Cove; his brothers: James Thompson and wife Rachel of Richardson, Michael Thompson of Denton, and Nathan Thompson and wife Stephanie of North Richland Hills; and his nephew Christopher Thompson of Richardson. William was preceded in death by his father Steven Rhea Thompson.

A celebration of William’s life will be held at Campfire Bar & Grill in Copperas Cove, Texas on Saturday, February 22nd at 2:00 PM. This will be a casual event for sharing stories and memories of William surrounded by friends and family, please dress as you feel comfortable.
