It is with great sadness that I inform you that Manuel Basilio dos Santos Geraldo, my father, left us on July 4th, 2024, at the age of 89. Surrounded by his immediate family members in his final moments, he was a man of great strength, witty sense of humor, and wisdom.
Manuel was born to Vidal and Maria Luisa Geraldo, on July 22nd, 1935, in Faro, Algarve, Portugal. He was a hard-working young man, never shying away from tough situations. He traveled to Africa with his parents at a young age and established roots there. He created his career in accounting and built his own practice working in various countries during his lifetime.
His strong and adventurous spirit is carried on by his wife, Célia; their son, Jorge and daughter, Célia, and her husband Greg; his eldest daughter, Stella; grandchildren Kailand, Sanaya, Samja and her partner, Sebastien; great-grandchildren, Eden and Noam. Preceding him in peace were his parents, Vidal and Maria Luisa; his brothers, Augusto and Fernando; parents-in-law, Manuel and Pilar.
Manuel loved family, but above all else, his wife, Célia. Their love was one of fairy tales in the great obstacles and hardships they had to endure and overcome over the years, which they did, and they were able to always live happily, as long as they were together. And they were together until his final breath.
In his final days, knowing that the end was near, he found the strength to pull himself up and say, “take care of your mother” – he dedicated his life not only to her care but to that of his family. His greatest regret was that of not being able to financially give everything to his family that they wanted or needed, but all that he could give, he did give, even to his own detriment.
He believed in family always, and strived to stay connected with them even though they are spread across the world.
He loved the ocean and all things connected to it – fishing, sailing, boating, and as a family, we have great memories tied to the ocean. From the beaches of Mozambique to the Algarve and all the way to Florida. These were the times he was at his happiest, out on the water with my mother by his side.
I have a plaque that says, “The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.” – my father gave us that gift, leaving a profound imprint on our lives. We will forever miss him.
The majority of Manuel’s extended family and friends are in Portugal. We are saddened that you will not be able to join us in the celebration of Manuel’s life, but we take great comfort in knowing that you are with us in spirit and in our hearts.
To honor Manuel’s memory, a service will be held at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, Copperas Cove, Texas, on Monday, July 15, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. (Central Standard Time).
