Joyce Ann Stahl was born on November 27, 1948 to Ralph and Agnes Stahl of Mansfield, Ohio. Joyce grew up in Mansfield and graduated from Madison High School. She was a member of the marching band in school and very active in their family church, St. Timothy Lutheran. Many family vacations involved travelling to St. Louis and Graniteville, Missouri, where her grandparents met and lived after immigrating from Scotland. Joyce attended The Ohio State University where she played the clarinet and got her degree in education. Go Buckeyes! After graduation, she started what would turn out to be a 38 year career as an elementary school teacher. She also met and married a fellow OSU grad, Don Phillips. Don, a fireman, tragically died fighting a fire, leaving Joyce a widow. Their tight knit group of friends from OSU is what got Joyce through the tragic loss. She kept busy, travelling with friends and family, and was known for her adventurous spirit, even trying out sky diving. Joyce started her teaching career working in the Columbus School District. She was known for her love of children of all ages and had a big heart. When some of her children couldn’t afford coats for the Ohio winters, she made sure they had one.
She then met and fell in love with Don Troupe, a servicemember of the Army, and they were married on August 9th, 1980. They welcomed their first son, Jeremy David Troupe in September of 1981 and moved to Kileen, Texas shortly thereafter. Joyce would spend the next 28 years teaching elementary school at Fairview Elementary and J.L. Williams Elementary in Copperas Cove, Texas, where they eventually moved to and built their family home. In April of 1984, they welcomed their second son, Andrew Clayton Troupe. Joyce was an avid reader and was known for her smarts, her sense of humor, and her stubbornness for those she loved. She loved her Ohio State Buckeyes and was the ultimate sports mom, supporting her sons at all of their games. She had a large group of teacher friends who loved her dearly and they enjoyed their meetups. She also welcomed any friends of her two sons and was a second mother to many. She and Don were also long time members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Copperas Cove and spent lots of their time in fellowship, serving God.
She was survived by her sons, Jeremy and her daughter in law Shawnda Troupe, and her two grandchildren, Avery and Brady Troupe; and Andrew Troupe and daughter in law Alyssa Troupe; as well as her beloved cousin, Mary Calcei, her husband Bob, and their family in Ohio.
Her family wants everyone to remember Joyce as the incredibly carefree and loving woman she was, which she was until the very end. Her beautiful spirit is now at peace.
A Memorial Service for Joyce will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on July 20th, 2024 beginning at 2pm.
