Gloria Louise (Johnston) Carrington passed from this life into the arms of her Heavenly Father on May 8, 2015, in Copperas Cove, TX. She was born on April 7, 1938 to V.S. and Louise Johnston in Cisco, TX. Gloria was reared in Cisco and graduated from Cisco High School in 1956. She married the love of her life David Carrington on September 2, 1960. They later had four children Teresa, Steve, Sheree and Nathan.
Gloria was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. Affectionately known as “Memaw”, she will be remembered for her loving personality. Her family and friends were the recipients of many of her hugs, kisses, and “ooch-a-hatchies”.
Gloria had a servant’s spirit. She served 21 years as the Ladies Auxiliary President in the Texico District of the United Pentecostal Church. She and her husband pastored churches in Grants, NM, Levelland, TX, and Dumas, TX. Their longest pastorate was in Dumas where they served for 38 years before retiring in 2008.
From a young age, she loved to play instruments in church. She was very talented at the accordion, piano and organ.
Gloria worked as a substitute teacher in Dumas public schools. She was loved by the students and affected many lives there. She was also a homemaker and loved to sew and crochet for her family.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents.
She leaves behind her loving husband David Carrington; her children Teresa (Donnie) Hendrick of Copperas Cove, TX, Steve (Sheila) Carrington of Farmington, NM, Sheree (Kent) Stover of Copperas Cove, TX, and Nathan (Rolanda) of Amarillo, TX; siblings Leon (Carolyn) Johnston, Randall (Sherry) Johnston, Linda (Marlin) Overman, and Elaine (Nathan) Gray; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 5-7 PM on Monday, May 11, 2015, at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, 211 W Avenue B, in Copperas Cove, TX. Celebration of Life will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 12th at Copperas Cove United Pentecostal Church, 1302 Pecan Cove Dr., in Copperas Cove, TX, with Rev. Terry Pugh officiating. The interment will follow at Central Texas State Cemetery, 11463 TX-195, in Killeen, TX.
