Inurnment services with military honors for David Larry Lehmkuhler will be 3:00 pm Friday, July 19, 2013 at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home of Copperas Cove is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lehmkuhler passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013 in a Temple hospital.
He was born May 30, 1942 to Ernest and Pauline Lehmkuhler in Stapleton, NE. David was raised on the family farm and attended grade school at Banner School which was a one room school for the first eight grades. He attended and graduated from Baker Rural Reserves. After he graduated from High School he went to Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri for basic training, advanced training and cook school. After returning from Army Reserve Training, he lived and worked in North Platte, NE where he met his bride to be. On June 3, 1962 Barbara Ellen Wisner and David were married. Their marriage was blessed with three children. He volunteered for active duty with the army, May 3, 1968 and went to Ft. Sheridan, IL to join his reserve unit. David then went to Ft. Carson, CO with his unit and his family joined him. In 1970, he was assigned to Ft. Richardson, Alaska for 6 years. In 1976, David and family moved to Ft. Hood, TX. In 1979, he went to Karlsruhe, Germany until his retirement in Nov 1985, when David and his family moved to the Killeen/Copperas Cove area. They bought a home west of Copperas Cove in 1986. David was employed at Ft. Hood as a tractor operator. He retired from his civil service job at Ft. Hood in Dec. 2005.
He enjoyed volunteering at the Temple VA for a short time and was a lifetime member in the DAV Chapter 29 in Harker Heights, TX. David was, also, a lifetime member of the Star Group of Veterans Helping Veterans in Copperas Cove, TX. David was a member of Platte Valley #32 AF & AM in North Platte, NE. David was a member of the First Presbyterian Church,
Copperas Cove, where he had served as an Elder. He enjoyed his woodworking and gave numerous items to friends. He, also, loved working in his yard. He was preceded in death by his father Ernest Lehmkuhler.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lehmkuhler, sons, Gary Lehmkuhler, and wife, Tracy, Duane Lehmkuhler, daughter Joan Lehmkuhler, and one grandson, James Lehmkuhler, all of Copperas Cove, TX. His mother, Pauline; brothers, Ernest G. Lehmkuhler, wife Ardis of North Platte, NE and Virgil Lehmkuhler, wife, Karen of Sidney Nebraska, also a sister, Charlene Berger, husband Dwayne of Dannebrog, NE.
