Ruth Brown Hicks, 93, of Coppell, Texas, peacefully passed away in her home, surrounded by family on Monday, June 3, 2024. Ruth was born to Thomas Lee Brown and Lillie May Corbin Brown on September 9, 1930 in Culpepper, Virginia. She was the seventh of eight children, all of whom have preceded her in death. Ruth was preceded in death by her mother and father, Thomas Lee and Lillie May Brown, her loving husband of sixty-six years, James Bernard Hicks Sr., her daughter Kathy Jean Phillips, and her great granddaughter, Hope Fischer.
Ruth was a cherished wife, mother, and grandmother and devoted her life to taking care of the ones she loved. She cooked, baked and enjoyed time with her family who always put a smile on her face and took every opportunity to be with her wherever she lived. She raised her family with the faith and ways of the Lord. She was an inspiration as a breast cancer survivor.
Ruth was raised in Virginia, moving to Washington DC in 1944, where she graduated the ninth grade and then worked as a secretary for an attorney in correspondence with the White House. In 1946, she married James (Jimmy) Hicks and moved from Washington DC to Maryland, where they raised their five children. Later, she and James retired to Fredericksburg, Virginia and in the early 90s, moved to Coppell to enjoy their golden years. After the passing of her husband James in 2012, Ruth moved to Delaware to reside with her daughter Kathy Jean and grandson Jimmy. In 2019, Ruth moved back to Texas for her final blessed years of her long and storied life.
Left to miss Ruth and cherish her memory are her 4 of her children, Ruth Ann Kovach (Robert), Betty Lou Fischer (Joseph), James Bernard Hicks Jr. (Barbara), Linda Sue Six (Charles); 12 grandchildren, Bobby Kovach (Tammy), Theresa Brooks (Eric), Betty Tayman (Albert), Joseph Fischer Jr., Wendy Cator (Robert), James B. Hicks III (Allie), Richard Hicks, Linda Six, Tracy Watts (Jeff), Samantha Leatherwood (David), Crystal O’Neill (John), Jimmy McMullen and 20 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
This beautiful and loving lady will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virgina, alongside her beloved husband, James on September 11, 2024 at 9:00 am.
