Mathew Thomas (Achenkunju) was born in Kozhencherry in Kerala, India on January 3, 1945. His parents were A.T. Mathew and Saramma Mathew and he was the oldest of three children. He graduated college with a mechanical engineering degree and worked in Calcutta, Sathara, and Poona in India after graduation. After moving from India to Galveston, Texas in 1978, he worked at Marathon Petroleum for 30 years before retiring. He married his loving wife, Sarah, in 1971 and had one son, Bobby. He enjoyed learning new things and participated in many sports activities during high school and college. He loved to cook, listen to country music, watch comedies, garden, and spend time with his family and friends. Mathew was a devoted believer in Jesus Christ and studied the Bible daily. He helped lead Bible study for the senior group (Pookalam Fellowship) at church and spent many hours studying the Bible and preparing notes. He served the church in different capacities throughout his life. In 2008, after retiring, Mathew and Sarah moved to Bedford to be closer to their family. He enjoyed his retirement years spending time with his family and making many good friends. Mathew especially enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren, Stephen and Allison, and teaching them about God’s word and love, and what is important in life. He was a humble, simple, kind, hardworking man, who fought the good fight and kept the faith. He is survived by his wife, Sarah; son, Bobby; daughter-in-law, Amy; grandchildren, Stephen and Allison; brother and sister-in-law, Anien & Mini Mathew; sister, Lali Mathew; and nieces Julie, Rini, and Tini.
