Kathy was born April 22nd, 1939 in Abilene, Kansas to Florence “Betty” McCleskey Crawford and Leo Crawford. Kathy grew up in Longford, Kansas and she was a drum major for her high school. On graduation she worked for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as an operator in the days when a friendly voice was always available and the operators pulled the cables to connect the callers. It was while working at the Waco phone company that she met her husband David Arthur Smith, an Air Force Flight Simulator instructor, from the Boston, Massachusetts area. They were married August 3rd, 1963.
The Smith family grew with the addition of son Daniel Edward Smith Dec. 15, 1972, and the family settled in Coppell, Texas as Dave took a job with International Business Machines. Being a mother, wife and Christian were Kathy’s three greatest joys in the years that followed. She was a friend to all, with a ready smile and always a can-do attitude. She loved antiques, classic westerns and occasional fan gatherings with the actors. Kathy was active in the Coppell Bible Fellowship and was a member of several quilting groups. Her creativity also included crochet and jewelry design. Kathy’s Crawford family held large reunions that Kathy loved returning to Kansas for, though her car had a bumper sticker saying she wasn’t born in Texas but "she got here as fast as she could."
Kathy was preceded in death by her son Dan, who bravely fought brain cancer and a series of seizures before resting in the arms of the Lord. She is survived by Dave, her husband of 59 years, her sister Janet of Longford, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
