Ellen Moore Hyndman

Ellen Hyndman was born November 7, 1927 in Florence AL. She went to be with the Lord Sunday September 11, 2022. There will be a memorial service at Hackberry Creek Church at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 17. The service will be followed by a reception with light refreshments (and more Ellen stories). Her burial will take place later this year and she will be interred next to her husband in the Memorial Garden at the Village Presbyterian Church in Northbrook IL.

She grew up living in multiple cities (Florence AL, Chattanooga TN, Alton IL, St. Louis MO, Nashville TN and finally Webster Groves MO) as her father Lawrence Baker (LB) Feagin moved to new assignments with the Corps of Engineers. It was in Webster Groves that she first met her future husband Robert (Bob) Hyndman while enrolled in the 6th grade. Ellen attended William Woods College and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1949.

She worked at Ralston Purina Mills protein lab, married, moved to Chicago, and then worked for a short time at Underwriters Lab. Ellen and Bob settled in Northbrook IL where they raised their three children. She loved being a mom and was dedicated to her children’s education and activities. She also volunteered for numerous causes including Great Books reading program, the PTA, Scouts, PEO and the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago - where she served as a tour guide, docent and a member of the Women’s Board for 35 years.

She loved to play golf with Bob and their friends. They also were members of curling teams at their club. She traveled her whole life, beginning with her own father, then with Bob when they travelled the globe through Bob’s work and for pleasure. Later in her life she took her children and grandchildren on a variety of world travels as well as co-hosting family reunions with her beloved sister Mary Lawrence.

She was an avid gardener, needlepointer, bridge player, puzzle worker and recently took up knitting again when she dedicated herself to making baby hats for newborns in local Dallas hospitals. She was a gourmet cook and an excellent seamstress. Ellen loved to host family gatherings and themed dinner parties. She and Bob loved classical music and musical theater. She was a season ticket holder to the Chicago Symphony and Artis Naples classical music programs.

She was an avid reader which served her well when she worked at the Book Bin - a small book store in Northbrook IL. One contributing factor to her longevity was her lifelong dedication to learning. Her curiosity about scripture, archeology, science, culture and, most importantly, other people kept her mind young her entire life.

Her faith sustained her throughout her life. She had a special interest in the intersection of scripture and other recorded history. She had been an active member, teacher and has served as an Elder in the Presbyterian church. She attended and served in Northbrook IL, Lake Forest IL, Bonita Springs FL and at Hackberry Creek (Irving), TX.

Ellen was a blessing to all she encountered. She was frequently described as: kind, loving, gracious, nurturing, generous with both time and resources, passionate about family and learning, supportive, intelligent, thoughtful, faithful, forgiving and, above all, she was joyful! Her generosity was on display through her annual contributions to dozens of charities oriented to faith, education, medical research and overcoming poverty.

She was preceded in death by her parents Mary Ellen Moore Feagin, Lawrence Baker Feagin, her husband Robert, and her sister Mary Lawrence Allen (R.C.) Ellen is survived by her three children: Linda (Michael), Doug (Eva), and Peter (Mary). She had 10 grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren with another due in October!
