Deepest sympathy to Alan's family. Alan was my next door neighbor growing up in Rome NY . He was a great friend and I have very many wonderful memories of him and his brothers. 
I am so very saddened to hear of his passing.

Our daughters became close friends in elementary school and remain so today.  The Cotter family has been a consistent and valued fixture in our family “landscape” for close to 20 years.  In ALL my memories of Alan, whether at the soccer field, or picking up Alex from school on his motorcycle, or after a sleepover or party at the Cotter house, Alan was smiling, laughing, and enjoying the moment.   The care and love that he and Kim provided our daughter will always be a part of our family story.  Alan, your absence is felt, and you are missed. 

 I am writing this directly to you my boy Huuuge Al because I just KNOW your sitting up there  grinning watching the scene with a beer in your hand messing with Big Bobbie knowing the best is still ahead in Heaven for most of us. On that note, would you mind coming up big with the occasional angel flybys to help the rest of us (me) out? 
 I have so many things to thank you for that have enriched or at least stabilized my life.  You were a dude that I always knew genuinely cared for me as you helped  as my universe collapsed twice. 
  We lifted together, then  you got too damn Huge for off the rack cloths and had to quit.  It feels like 4 days ago we were ruthlessly  tag teaming  and  torturing the unprepared Walter's clan with our relentless and possibly(?) annoying Beavis and Butthead routines. You were my best friend for years and best brother in-law I ever had. You taught me so many things were possible. I had zero clue parasailing was a sport done in corn fields with pickup trucks. I remember like it was yesterday hanging out on the top porch in Pagosa with Bobbie underneath wondering where the skunk was.  You taught so many people how to savior every second of life.  I cannot believe you are gone and how much I miss knowing I will never lose another one liner contest to you again.  The lessons you taught us will echo an eternity. Alan has been my coworker for many years, but we have always been on different teams.  It wasn't until these last 2-3 years; we had the opportunity to work on the same team.   Whenever work became too much, for either of us, we’d take some time to out to vent.  Alan had a great sense of humor and without fail, a few minutes into our conversation(s), I’d forget my frustrations.  One of our favorite movies to quote from was “Office Space”.  If you’ve seen the movie, then you would understand how closely the movie resembled our office life at times.  

I never got the opportunity to meet Alan’s family, but I know he loved his wife very much and was always so proud of his children.  I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know Alan better.  My only regret is that I never got Alan that red stapler!   


Jesus told His followers, “I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last” (John 15:16). Righteous fruit has eternal benefit.  Alan led his life by example.  He showed such great love to you – yours is a great love story I am glad to have witnessed, your children – they will cherish his love and guidance forever, his parents – the way he honored his parents, took care of them, loved them is an inspiration to us all on how to treat family, your parents, his friends and neighbors all knew his warm kindness.  He always had a smile, took the time to listen and lend a helping hand.  I am blessed to have known him and to call him a dear friend. He will be missed by so many.  Love you so much Kim. Alan has always been a true gentleman and I can not recollect a conversation that I had with him that he was not talking about his family in one way or another. He is truly missed. May love and peace be with you Kim.

Alan is one of the best men I've ever known, and the best friend a guy could have.  The whole Cotter family are among the best, most generous people I know.  
Almost from the day we met, we found that we had several likes in common;  cars, beer, motorcycles, guitars, southern rock,  beer...  and tequila on special occasions.  
Alan had his own kind of humor - always quick with a comeback, or a one-liner, or to twist your words and toss 'em back at you.  And he enjoyed his own humor almost as much as his audience did, which somehow just made you laugh harder.
Our motorcycle rides with Steve, Fran, Ric, Garland and Tom, et al, are some of the best times I can remember.
And jamming with Alan was always a treat.  We only got together 2 or 3 times a year, but we were making progress...
I admired Alan very much.  He always put his family first, but always made time for his friends.  He took the final ride without us, but I expect he'll have a cold one waiting when we take ours.

Al was always such a great guy, and such a fun guy to hang out with. 
Al, Steve, and I played hockey on the same team for many years with a good group of guys, and after that we still managed to have several get togethers with other teammates, such as watching the annual New Year's day Hockey Winter Classic. My main memory is Al always having a big friendly smile and laughing a lot as we shared stories at the games and the get togethers.

Alan Kevin Cotter; my struggle has been to condense my memories to one or two paragraphs. He's been been my friend since 1978 and he was my brother-in-law from 1981-2000. I always considered him my michevious little brother. The "Troy Aikmen" incident (immediate family will understand); my first meeting of my future in-laws; paint-ball activity; family camping trips and family poker nights with the Walter's. All memories I will cherish until my last waking breath. He was with me during one of the most challenging periods of my life and for that I am so thankful. I was so pleased to see you with Kim, Kevin and Alex this summer and the pride in your eyes as you looked upon your children and their accomplishments you shared with me. My faith tells me I will see again. Until then little brother save me a spot in heaven. Love you Kim. Hearty hugs.

Alan was the best of friends since high school. He will be missed.

Uncle Al was around for lot of early childhood memories. He and my dad took us ice skating many times, they took me to see the first Spider-Man movie(2002) and on one of the many Christmases we spent together, we got our first gaming console, the GameCube, and the first video game series that I really got attached to, The Legend of Zelda. Sounds kind of goofy but they are  key memories from my early childhood that I hold in high value. I will miss him dearly. 

Hello friends and family of the Cotter‘s. Our girls became  friends at University and lived together sophomore year at, what I sarcastically refer to - A luxury apartment situation only a sucker parent agrees to. Evidently both Alan and I pulled the short stick w/Our respective spouses &  were tasked with moving the girls in. Move in day always entertaining. I met Alan at their front door, girls nowhere to be found. Immediately we laughed about the audacity, The hot humid Arkansas day, the unusual smell in the hallway, and our mutual admiration of our kids. Parents moving precious cargo. 

Although I didn’t get enough time with Alan, I recognized his devotion and genuine interest in his daughter’s life. We talked about our families exchanged contact information and stayed in touch periodically over the rest of the girls’ amazing college days. I wish I would have had a chance to drink a beer with him; to call the Hogs; Hike Devil’s Den; Or nurse a hangover at Arsagios over brunch with our spouses following an evening trying to keep up with our party girls. I’m thankful to have the joy to know and love Alex more and more and the opportunity to know Kim Cotter. There’s no time like the present. 

Cotter’s - Peace and strength during all the challenges that come with great loss. In special memory of Alan and honoring a brief moment of time I’m grateful to  have spent with him. WPS.

Big Al was one of my favorite peeps. All the Cotters. Could not be a better family.  The last time I saw Al was him visiting me in the hospital. He took time out of a long day to come see me. I was beyond shocked to see him. We would try and get together annually,  our old group of friends for 35 years. Every time we'd gather it was like we were never apart. Love this man and his family and will carry his memory til my memory is gone. God bless you Huge. I wish I could share more memories but gotta keep it clean. Love you my brother. Until we meet again.
