Verna was born on July 20, 1929, in New Waverly, Texas. Soon after her birth, the family relocated to Dobbin, Texas where she grew up as the eldest of five siblings on a small family farm. Upon her father’s passing, she sacrificed many things to help her mother raise her siblings and helped with chores around the home. When she moved to Conroe, she worked as a counter clerk at Johnson’s Laundry where she met her loving husband of 41 years, Jeff Davis.
Verna was a faithful and active member of the Conroe Church of God-Seventh Day for 61 years. She also enjoyed participating on a bowling and volleyball league with friends. After she became a mother on March 16, 1957, her only focus was to take care of her family and her home. Verna was known as a prayer warrior to all her family and friends where she spent hours on her knees daily praying for everyone by name. She was passionate about baking her daughter’s and grandchildren’s birthday cakes every year by special request and never missed sending out a card for any occasion to a family member, friend, or acquaintance. She enjoyed taking care of her daughter and eventually her grandchildren and always made sure they had a packed lunch for school with personalized notes and a variety of food so they would be happy with what they got. She also loved to journal, there was never a day that she did not write down the subject of her prayers or the state of the weather (which we are truly enjoying reading as a family now). She was the most unselfish and giving woman you would ever meet. She wanted to thank everyone for caring so much for her throughout the years.
She is preceded in death by her husband Jeff Davis, her parents Frank Smith and Ophelia Smith, stepfather Albert Novark, her brothers Marion (Smitty) Smith and Edward Smith. She is also preceded in death by her life-long friends Virginia Ruth Brann and Ken and Gladys McCoy whom she considered a part of her family.
She is survived by her sisters Lucille Slott and Berniece Johnston, her daughter Jeflyn Brocato and husband Mike, her grandchildren Jarrod McElroy and wife Katie, Jeff McElroy, Jayci Lucius and husband Casey and Kayla Brocato, her great grandchildren, Lauryn McElroy, Chandler Lucius, Jenna McElroy, Makenli Lucius, Austin Buckley and Corbin Buckley, as well as two great-great grandchildren Kayler and Kellyn Lafoy. Special thanks to Cal McElroy for being her constant caretaker for the past four years, as well as Three Oaks Hospice for their wonderful care of our very special gran-gran.
