She later moved to Texas where she met her high school sweetheart, Frank Elam. They married in 1949 after he returned from serving in the U.S. Navy in WWII. They built their family home on Silverdale Dr. in Conroe where they raised a family of two girls and two boys. Frank worked at Everett's Hardware his whole life with the support of Vera and their children. All of the Elam children worked at the store at one time in their lives.
As active members of First Baptist Church Conroe, Frank and Vera were instrumental in guiding the church and directing its vision for the future. She served in many positions at the church touching children's lives. Vera was a leader in the Conroe Girl Scouts' program and spent many years in that role. She was a talented seamstress and her skills were recognized when she was chosen to sew all of the original uniforms for the newly formed Conroe High School Golden Girls' drill team in 1970.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Vera was loved by everyone who knew her. She and Frank set a Godly example for their children and others. She goes to her heavenly home having loved and served her Savior, Jesus Christ who first loved her.
Vera is survived by her children Charlotte Casso and husband Ron, Susie Kamman and husband Keith, James Frank Elam Jr. and wife Chari, Mark Elam and wife Margie, along with their families.
She was fondly known as "Nannie" to a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Amelda Sloan and Sister-in-law Mary Sue Walker.
The Elam family wants to thank Vera's personal caregiver, Terry Diel and all the employees of Park Manor Nursing Home in Conroe who made her more comfortable in the latter years of her life. They also want to thank Rev. Cliff Herrington whose life of Godly service and pastoral care guided the entire family for many decades.
