Ruth Mildred (West) Lindsey was born July 18, 1937 in Houston, Texas to Fred and Lavena West. She went to be with the Lord the afternoon of June 29, 2024. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, three grandchildren and their spouses, and six great grandchildren. Ruth will be met at Heaven's gate by her husband of 57 years, S. E. “Sonny” Lindsey, and a host of beloved relatives and dear friends.
Ruth was introduced to Sonny at a church picnic on the river in March of 1954. Having been brought up in a christian household, Ruth loved the Lord with all her heart, and led Sonny to Him as well. They were married on December 17, 1954 and their family soon expanded to include Joe, Janet, and Curtis. She was a devoted mother, homemaker, and bookkeeper for the family business. Camping trips and floating the river at Garner State Park and New Braunfels were favorite family vacations. Ruth was a great seamstress who frequently made clothes, pillows, and other home decor. It could be said that she was a pioneer in home renovations before HGTV was even thought about. She enjoyed cooking and creating recipes and was well known for her talents in the kitchen. Her culinary passion meant that nightly dinners in the Lindsey household could put a Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving to shame. Not only was she an artist in the kitchen, but she was also an avid painter who was particularly fond of landscape and floral paintings. She joined an art class that met on Thursdays, but this class became a close knit group of friends that painted together for decades. This group of women was like family and therapy for each other, and they coined the phrase “Don’t mess with Thursdays.”
Her other hobbies included collecting hummingbird figurines, Emmett Kelly Clowns, and thimbles from her travels around the world. Gardening was a favored pastime whether it was tending to her beautiful rose bushes, vegetable plants, or simply mowing the yard. Things that made her smile were sunflowers, peppermints, black liquorice, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren. She loved being a grandmother and despite initially wanting to be called “Grandma,” she fully embraced her granddaughter’s insisting that she be called “Meemaw.” In fact, she began introducing herself to everyone as Meemaw. When the grandsons came along, the grandkids would all get together and have sleepover “parties” at the farm complete with popcorn, ice cream and Oreos (even though Meemaw didn’t care for chocolate). She did all kinds of things with her grandkids…racing four wheelers, fishing, cooking, vacations, and, when they were little, she would sit with them in a rocking chair and sing. Some of her favorite songs were Three Little Fishies, A Bushel and a Peck, and, true to her beliefs, This Little Light of Mine.
A strong woman of faith, Ruth was known as a prayer warrior. If something needed prayer, she was the person to ask. Her exuberant love for the Lord gave her the ability to show grace and bring peace to so many people that sought her advice and wisdom. She was an inspiration in her walk with Christ, and her comfort and compassion will be dearly missed.
“Behold the dwelling place. He will dwell with them. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:3-7
