Born July 13, 1924 in Beaumont, TX, she was the daughter of Charles E. Baker and Myrtle Hoffpauir Baker.
Ruby Lee is survived by one son, Clint Wright and two grandchildren that she thought of and asked about every single day, Claire Richards of San Diego and Hayden Wright of Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Also surviving is her sister, Joyce Staples of Ft. Worth, who she also thought and inquired of daily and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, several sisters and a brother and by Walter Wright, her husband of 52 years who she married on October 5, 1946 in China, the one surrounded by rice fields and grain elevators west of Beaumont.
Ruby Lee enjoyed visiting her parents' childhood homes of New York City, where her father's family settled after escaping the late nineteenth century pogroms of the Russian Empire (Ukraine) and south Louisiana where her mother's ancestors were among the earliest Acadians to arrive in Louisiana in the 1770s as a result of the Le Grand Dérangement. This background largely influenced her lifetime empathy and kindness for the downtrodden and disadvantaged.
She was of the generation to whom frugality and hard work was not a choice and carried that trait throughout her life. Ruby Lee worked at United States Steel, first at the plant in Baytown then in downtown Houston well into the 1970s, leaving before dawn and arriving home after sunset to support her husband's dream of starting his own business (a funeral home) in Conroe. She (and he) achieved that dream and found a welcoming and warm new home to spend the rest of their lives in Conroe. Later she worked at and maintained a booth at the 1488 Antique Mall where her circle of friends and co-workers grew to include many whose company she enjoyed the past few years. Incessantly polite, her compassion, graciousness and humility affected all that came to know her.
Her son had the honor and privilege of living close and seeing her every day these past couple of years and she also cherished daily visits from her home healthcare workers and Meals on Wheels.
A memorial visitation will be held at Cashner Funeral Home, 801 Teas Road in Conroe on Wednesday, September 2, from 5pm to 7pm with an interment service at the Wright Family Cemetery in Buna, Texas as soon as repairs and clean up from Hurricane Laura permit.
In lieu of flowers her wish would be a donation to Meals on Wheels or your local church.
