Robert G. Hathaway went to his final rest on February 19, 2018, in Conroe, Texas, at the age of 91, surrounded by his loving family. He died as he requested, in his own home, on his own terms, after a brief illness. His last weeks were peaceful and mercifully without much pain. For this his family is very grateful. Bob was born November 15, 1926 in Superior, Wisconsin, the eldest of the three sons of George J. and Letitia A. Hathaway. He graduated from Superior High, attended college at UW-Madison, and obtained his MD from Marquette University in 1951. He completed his internship and anesthesia residency at Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, where he met Patricia Scott, a dietician at the hospital. They married in 1953, had a son and daughter, and remained married for 61 years, until Pat’s death in 2014. Bob served in the Regular Army of the United States for eight years, from which he was honorably discharged in 1961, as a Major. He served overseas as the head of anesthesia services at the U.S. Army Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany for two years; he then served in a number of posts in the U.S. Southwest until his discharge. His military service was a source of great pride for him throughout his life. He and Pat made a home in Waterloo, Iowa where Bob practiced medicine for 23 years, first at St. Francis Hospital, then at Allen Hospital, where he served in a variety of leadership positions over the years. He and Pat moved to Conroe, Texas in 1984, where he worked for 10 years before retiring from the active practice of medicine at 71 years of age. He loved the United States Army and he loved practicing medicine. He loved and was very involved with his church family at First Presbyterian Church of Conroe. His greatest love, however, was fishing for walleye or big northern pike at North Star Camp on Clay Lake in Vermilion Bay, Ontario, a beloved vacation spot where he spent time most summers for the last 50 years. Bob is survived by his two children, Anne (Wes) Bush, RN, of Willis, Texas, and Dr. Scott Hathaway, of Shawano, Wisconsin, and by his only grandchild, Gretchen Hathaway, currently living in Portland, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Pat, and his two younger brothers, Dave and Walt. He was a big teddy bear of a man, who loved to hold infants, cried easily, and gave generously to many causes, usually anonymously. He will be sorely missed by his family and his community but his many, many stories will continue to be told by those who knew him. His wishes were to be cremated and then buried in the family plot in Chetek, Wisconsin, alongside Pat and many relatives.
