He was born in Burlington, Iowa to Philip and Mildred Derby. He married the love of his life, Violet Derby on January 17, 1970. He is survived by his wife, Violet; his 3 daughters Caroline Derby Hafling (Deane), Laura Derby Piland (Frankie), Ellen Derby Lukert (Jared); his 4 grandchildren Michael and Katherine Hafling, Kyle and Lindsay Lukert; and his sister Lynn Derby Helmke (David).
Newt graduated from the University of Arizona College of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He spent the first part of his career working for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was also self-employed as a general contractor and real estate investor for more than 50 years. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers with Professional Engineer licenses in Arizona, California, Texas and Colorado.
Newt was an avid train collector and a leader within the national Train Collectors Association (TCA) serving as National Vice President 2000-2001 and National President 2002-2003. He will leave a lasting legacy with the TCA organization. He was also a proud member of the Boy Scouts of America from 1948-1969 where he achieved the Eagle Scout rank and mentored others as an Assistant Scout Master. He truly lived his life following the Boy Scout Law: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent.
He was highly educated, self-driven, detail oriented and a true friend. Newt was eager to mentor others with his vast knowledge of trains, home repairs and construction.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 16, 2:00 p.m. at Cashner Funeral Home, 801 Teas Nursery Road, Conroe, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Special Cheers, or F.A.C.E.S (Foundation for Autism Care, Education and Services).
