Mitchell was a truck driver for over 50 years, an occupation that he truly loved. After retiring from Jack Cooper Transport in 1999, he would continue to drive hotshot deliveries until he was in his 80’s. Whether it was an 18-wheeler or his pickup truck, he loved to drive. Rain, snow, sleet, ice, or sunshine, it never mattered as long as his wheels were rolling. He was an outdoorsman at heart, deer hunting any chance he got. He was still climbing into a deer stand in his 80’s at 5 AM in freezing weather waiting for the big one and watching the day come alive at sunrise. His other love was spending time with his three granddaughters who absolutely adored him and he them.
He was preceded in death by his soulmate and loving wife, Laura, both of his parents, his sisters Gertrude Eckstrum and Louise Shumway, and brothers LB Pate and Burton Pate. Mitchell is survived by his children Michael Wayne Pate and spouse Teresa, Vicki Pate, Mitchell Dean Pate, Sr and spouse Malissa, Evelyn Wiggins and spouse Michael, Tracy Pate Hill, Lori Pate Uttinger, and Jason Pate, grandchildren Drew, Cheyenne, Brylee, Mike, Bambi, Manda, Mitchell, Elizabeth, Michael, Taylor, Christen, Caleb, Tessa, Brittany and 20 great-grandchildren.
