Marion L. Coulson, age 72, of Conroe, Texas passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at home with his family at his side following a short, but brave, fight against cancer. Marion always liked to tell the story of how he was inducted into the U. S. Army on the same day and time that President Kennedy was inaugurated. His death occurred on the same date fifty-five years later.
Marion was born in Enid, Oklahoma to Raymond and Mae Coulson on March 27, 1943. He attended North Enid Public School before enlisting in the service where he specialized in Radio and Teletype Operations. Upon discharge, he worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling plant in Enid, Oklahoma. He married Sherry Harth in 1965. During their five-year marriage, they had one daughter, Steffey Su Coulson, and Marion also helped raise his stepson, Travis Baker.
In 1970, Marion was offered an opportunity to join the rapidly-growing cable construction industry, starting as a lineman and working his way up to Project Manager. His career allowed him to travel all around the country and meet many interesting people; and he could tell a thousand stories about his experiences. No matter where he lived, however, he always considered himself an Oklahoman, and was a great fan of both OU and OSU football. But perhaps most importantly, Marion was a great dad. He was proud of his kids, and could be found at every recital, horse show, football and baseball game, graduation, and awards ceremony.
Marion married Rebecca (Wegehoft) Coulson on December 24, 1974 in Jacksonville, Illinois, and they had two children, Elizabeth Ann and Matthew Allen. He assisted his father-in-law for ten years on a mixed grain and livestock operation that had been in his wife’s family since 1851. He enjoyed agriculture, particularly working with cattle. When the family farm was sold in 1985 he returned to the cable industry and relocated to Conroe, Texas.
Marion is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mae Coulson; sister, Billie Colleen Coulson; brothers, Frankie Albert, Clarence, and Ronald “Bub” Coulson; and great-granddaughter, Taylee.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Rebecca Coulson; brother Christopher “Buzz” Coulson (Sherry); children Steffey Lewallen (Charles), Elizabeth Coulson (Ron), and Matthew Coulson (Jessica); grandchildren Shay Titus, Jonathan Titus (Elaina), Tiffanie Lambert (Chad), and Jesse Tucker (Hannah); great-grandchildren Reagan, Brooklyn, Tatem, Sawyer, Tyce, Case, Weston, Krayden, and Vinny; and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and great-nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held at Cashner Funeral Home on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 27 at 11:00 am at Cody-Buchanan Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Illinois with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery.
