John Howard Doak passed away January 4, 2014 at the age of 87. John grew up in Franklin, Tennessee where he graduated high school at the age of sixteen. John volunteered in the United States Army Air Force during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific Theatre where he served in an Intelligence role. When the war ended he attended Vanderbilt University and graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree. After moving to Houston, he began a 35-year career with Brown & Root, during which he traveled the world extensively and spent two years living in Singapore. Before retiring as Vice-President, he returned to the Houston area, and later was an active member of the Brown & Root Retirees Association as well as a member of The Woodlands United Methodist Church. During his retirement years, he enjoyed playing golf, gardening, and visiting with family and friends. In addition to being a member of the “Greatest Generation,” John was a kind, loving, and lighthearted man with an impeccable sense of humor. He is survived by his loving wife Joy, his two children Rick Doak and Diane Doak Taylor, four grandchildren, Matt Doak, Lauren Doak Laake, Travis Doak, and Landry Taylor, as well as his two brothers Hoyt Doak Jr. and Bill Doak and numerous nieces and nephews.A private Celebration of Life will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Wounded Warrior Project or The American Heart Association.
