James Harles Smith, age 90 passed away on Tuesday March 27, 2018. James was born October 4, 1927 in Leesville, Louisiana. James had a full life – as a young man, he earned the award of an Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America. He worked hard and played hard. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed spending time on Lake Conroe and taking his family camping, boating, and waterskiing. He loved gardening and grew lots of vegetables every year and just loved spending time with his family. He was very active until Alzheimer’s disease took his ability to do the things he loved. James served his country as Navy service 1946 – 1948 and also served in Korea 1951 – 1953. He obtained a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern State University in Louisiana 1951. He married Arline Helen November 23rd 1971 and worked with Montgomery County Sherriff’s department with Sheriff Gene Reeves in the 1970's. James was a member of Conroe Lodge 748 where he was a 60-year Mason and was a past Patron of Conroe Chapter 710 OES where he served as secretary for 20 years. He finaly retired after working for the US Postal Service in Louisiana and Texas for over 30 years. After retirement, he built a house at his farm in Centerville. James is survived by his wife Arline Helen, daughters Rebecca Kennedy and husband Kevin, Loretta Fanning and husband Jeff, Teressa Voltz and husband Morris, and Jennifer Hooper; his grandchildren Amy Dick and husband Michael, Sarah Kennedy, Jessica Voltz, Chelsea Hill and husband Kory, Jacob Voltz and fiancé Hailee Mann, and Jade and Lia Hooper and great grandchildren Kennedy and Kent Dick.
