Helen was born on May 2, 1933 in San Antonio, Texas to the late Ernest Arnold and Minnie Lee Matthews. She married her life love, James (Jay or JC) Charles Lewis on March 6, 1954. They were married 49 years and had 2 children. They lived in Houston until moving to Spring in 1968. They retired to Riverside, Texas and then moved to Willis in 2000.
She is survived by her, daughter, Linda Karen Lewis Johnson and her husband Bruce; son, Bryan Dwayne Lewis; grandchildren, Bryan Scott Thames and his wife Candace, Jacee Lynn Thames, and Leslie Diane Lewis; great grandchildren; Skyler Baleigh-Marie Thames, and Haley Lewis.
When Helen’s children were young she acquired her cosmetology license and set up her home shop in their laundry room. These services were often bartered for piano lessons for both kids, which they hated. Helen was a very creative seamstress, taking over our only storage closet to cut patterns, sew, iron and hem anything needed. She also taught her daughter to sew her own (and her kids) clothes at a very young age. Helen was also Mom to many Dachshund children: Penny, Phoebe, Frieda, Sara, and Molly over the years. Helen accomplished attaining her GED in 1977 at 44 years of age. She worked mostly in the grocery or food industry, starting at JW Weingarten running the Delicatessen in many locations, later moving to Service Brokerage for delivery and set up, where she retired. After her husband’s passing, she needed something to keep her busy and became a 3 day a week volunteer for Conroe Regional Hospital for 10 years. Covid ended this avenue for her. Helen was very active in her church and Sunday School, gaining many close friends, many here today, until she could no longer live at home. She loved gardening, reading, word find puzzle books, and making any kind of soup!
