George Truett Branch was born in Levelland, Texas on November 11, 1934. He passed away in Conroe, Texas on February 18, 2013 at the age of 78. George is preceded in death by mother and father Ruby Delaney and John S. Branch, and brothers William H. Branch, James D. Branch, John F. Branch & niece Deborah Branch. He is survived by daughter Mechelle Branch-Kovacs & son-in-law Brian Kovacs, grandsons Austin West & Zachary Kovacs, & granddaughters Ashtyn West & Kathleen Kovacs, niece & nephews Patty Branch, Johnny Branch, Laura Branch-Bryant, Donna Branch, James Branch, Beverly Branch-Evans & numerous cousins. Growing up, George had a memorable childhood in Levelland, Texas where he acquired his love of football . He was a Co-Captain & running back for the Lobo Varsity Football team from 1931-1934. George attended Texas A&M University working on his Bachelor degree for 3 years. George was drafted & served in the U.S. Army Big Red 1 Infantry Division & represented the United States on the Le’Clerc Rifle Team setting international riflery records. Following his military service, he returned to Huntsville, Texas to finish his Bachelor degree & Master of Education degree at Sam Houston State University. After receiving his degrees from SHSU, he went to work for Conroe ISD in 1963. He worked for CISD for 35 years, retiring in 1998. During his years at CISD, he was an Assistant Principal of Sam Houston Elementary, and Principal of Sam Houston Elementary, Lamar Elementary, Oak Ridge Elementary, Ford Elementary & Houser Intermediate. His time of service with CISD was one of lasting friendships & deeply valued memories. After retirement he served as Mayor of Elkhart, Texas. He was a faithful servant of Percilla Community Church, serving as an elder & church Board Member. He married, Gwen Hotchkiss, on March 8, 1957. He was a devoted husband & father whom will be greatly missed. Special thanks are extended to his dear friends James Kaufman, Myron Fietz, Bobby Weise & Pastor Kenny Bush. Also, we would like to thank all of the people at Above & Beyond Assisted Living & Odyssey Hospice who have been so compassionate and helpful to our family. Visitation with the family will be held Friday, February 22, 2013 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Cashner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be performed at 3 PM on Saturday, February 23, 2013.
