Gary Russell Weinburger passed away at home on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 after a valiant fight with cancer over the past two years. Gary was born in South Lyon, Michigan on July 21, 1942 to parents Albert “Albie” and Evelyn Weinburger. The Weinburger family relocated to Houston, Texas in 1960. Gary graduated from Bellaire High School in 1960 and briefly attended Sam Houston State University before returning to work. Gary worked many years while attending college at night at the University of Houston pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Inventory Control Management. He graduated in 1968 and was a lifetime alumnus and supporter of Cougar athletics. Gary was known in the community for his red Cougar shirts and UH Game Day shirts. Gary demonstrated a strong work-ethic, integrity, and a strong faith that he got from his parents and shared with both his family and those who were fortunate to have known him. He volunteered for many roles within his faith and community that demonstrated both ethic and his love of others. Gary was a friend to all.
Over the years Gary worked for many different companies but ended his career with Salzgitter Mannesmann Stainless in Houston upon retirement in 2008. Gary loved many sports but had a special love for golf. He was a member of the Conroe County Club for many years and in prior years had been a member of Forest Cove Country Club, Kingwood Cove Country Club in Kingwood, as well as the Country Club in Bryan, Texas. He enjoyed traveling to Mentor, Ohio for many years to play in the Simmons family golf tournament. Gary and his wife of forty-two years, Judy, also enjoyed attending the University of Houston home football and basketball games throughout his life. He and Judy also enjoyed the Houston Symphony Pops and visiting many places throughout the United States, and Hawaii. Towards the end of his career, Gary spent time in Europe on corporate business. Gary and Judy enjoyed many seasons at their time-share on South Padre Island in South Texas.
It was love at first sight for Gary and Judy. They were married on April 19, 1980, at St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Houston. Over their forty-two years together, they worked in their faith, in the community and enjoyed their trips together. Gary is survived by his wife, Judy; sons, Russell Weinburger and his wife Betty, and Bill Weinburger; step children, Michael Stewart and his wife Wendy, Michele Stewart Tallman and her husband Tim, and Mark Stewart; grandchildren, Amanda Tallman Moore, Danielle Weinburger, Jeffrey Tallman, Jolie Stewart, and Jessica Weinburger.
