David was born on August 21, 1940, to Dennis Curry Lentz and Lois Josephine Whitworth, in Nacogdoches, Texas. He attended school in Huntsville and Conroe, graduating from Conroe High School in 1958. David attended Texas A&M University and Lamar University, where he studied civil engineering. He served four years in the Army during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant with the Army Corps of Engineers.
Upon returning to Conroe after his years in the service, he was instrumental in establishing VFW Post 4709. David dedicated his life to VFW Post 4709 with almost 40 years of continuous service as either the Post Commander or Quartermaster, the office that he held at the time of his death. David was honored as VFW Post 4709 All-State Quartermaster and All-State Commander five times during his years of service. He was recently honored by his Post with a Gold Legacy Life Membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
When not working at the VFW Post, David enjoyed following his beloved Aggie sports teams on TV and radio.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Lois Lentz. He is survived by his daughter, Suann Lentz Hereford, and her husband, Steven Shane Dulin, of Montgomery; son, John Lentz Hereford, and his fiancée, Laurie O'Brien, of Huntsville; granddaughter, Kristin Hereford, of Huntsville; grandsons Joshua Dulin and wife, Krystle, of Kingwood, and Jeremy Dulin, currently stationed in Okinawa with the US Navy; and the mother of his children, Sue Morgenroth Hereford, of Conroe. Our family is greatly appreciative to his good friend, Frank Malandrucolo, who spent time with him daily for the last few months as well as the staff at Azalea House for their care of David during the last days of his life.
Graveside services for David will be held on Wednesday, March 9, at 11:00am at the Old Red Rock Cemetery in Red Rock, Texas. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 8, from 6:00-8:00pm at Metcalf Funeral Home in Conroe. Friends who wish to continue David’s life of service to area veterans may send contributions in his memory to VFW Post 4709, PO Box 122, Conroe, TX 77305.
