Bernice Walters, 93, of Conroe, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away May 24, 2017 at her home in Conroe. Bernice was born in Willis, Texas July 15, 1923 the oldest child of C.R. (Reg) and Gladys Yawn Greer. She was preceded in death by her parents Reg and Gladys Greer of Willis, Woodrow, her husband of 70+ years, her son Wilson, grandson Larry Walters all of Conroe and brother M.E. (Buddy) Greer of Van Vleck. She is survived by her sons Jerry Walters of Bellville, Kenny Walters and wife Marie of The Woodlands; daughter-in-law Sharon Walters of Conroe; grandsons Kevin Walters and wife Vicki of San Antonio, Jeffery Walters of The Woodlands; granddaughter Kristin Mercado and husband Ed of Katy. Great grandchildren Anthony, Eliot, Nicholas, Jaxon Mercado of Katy and MacKenzie Walters of San Antonio. Bernice is also survived by her sister Betty Jo Strozier and husband A.B. of Willis and sister-in-law Mary Ann Greer of Van Vleck. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Bernice loved her family more than life itself and she always put their needs above her own. She married Woodrow Walters September 6, 1938 and for 70+ years his needs always took precedence, especially during the latter part of his life. Bernice and Woodrow enjoyed life and dancing was one of their favorite pastimes. They especially enjoyed square dancing and belonged to the Hastings Square Dance Club traveling with their friends to many square dance venues in Alvin, Texas and surrounding areas. A graduate of Baldwin Beauty College, Bernice was an accomplished beautician and operated a salon out of her home for many years. After living in Alvin for 40+ years and raising their family, Bernice and Woodrow moved to Conroe in 1992 to be closer to their families. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Alvin and New Hope Baptist Church of Evergreen, Texas. A heartfelt thank you to her caregivers for their loving and unselfish devotion to Bernice. Bernice will be laid to rest in Willis Cemetery, Willis, Texas, beside her beloved Woodrow and loving parents.
Visitation will be Friday, May 26, 2017 at Metcalf Funeral Directors 5:00pm-7:00pm. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 2pm in Willis Cemetery in Willis, Texas.
