Anne Pruitt Watt

Anne Louise Pruitt Watt of Conroe, Texas passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of December 12, 2017. She touched the lives of many during her 95 years, and her love, wisdom, beauty and humor (including her infectious and frequently mischievous smile) will be sorely missed.

Anne was born on May 23, 1922 in Waco, Texas. Her family moved to the East Texas town of Lindale following the death of her father when she was 13 years old. She moved in with her oldest brother, Nero, to finish high school in Texarkana where she could complete some pre-nursing courses, and then attended ETSU (now A&M Commerce) for a year prior to entering Jefferson Davis Hospital School of Nursing in Houston, graduating in 1943. She moved to California and worked in nursing before joining the Army Nurse Corp. After a year she entered the University of California at Berkeley and received her degree in Public Health and School Nursing.

She married “the love of my life,” Tom Watt, on June 16, 1950. They lived in North Carolina, Colorado, New York, Texas (in Houston, where she was the nurse at Johnston Junior High School for the years her children attended it), Kentucky, Maryland and Alabama prior to returning to Texas upon Tom’s retirement and building their “dream” home on Lake Conroe in 1987.

She was an avid tennis player into her 80s and sang with her community troupe, The April Sounders, as well as church choirs and other musical productions and groups throughout her years.

As a veteran, she was celebrated with inclusion on the Honor Flight, a whirlwind trip from Houston to Washington, D.C. to visit veterans’ memorials.

Anne’s Christian faith and church were very important to her. She was a faithful believer who loved and served the Lord in an unassuming yet palpable manner. Until her health started failing in recent years, she had always been involved in her churches’ Sunday schools, music ministries, and other activities, for the past 25 years at First Baptist Church, Conroe. This was also the source of many of her best friendships over the years. She eagerly awaited this time when she would be reunited in the Lord with her beloved Tom and her parents, siblings and other friends.

Anne is survived by: son Thomas B. Watt, III and wife, Kathy; daughter Martha Louise Watt Mitchell; son Edward Pruitt Watt and wife, Becky; son David Ray Watt and wife, Karen; son Frederick Blackwell Watt and wife, Terri; 27 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Thomas (Tom) Bunyan Watt, Jr; daughter Beth-Anne Watt; son-in-law Lon Mitchell, Jr.; father, Nero Pruitt; mother, Lesbia Cecile Ray Pruitt; sisters Hortense and Deda; and brothers Nero, Ray, Virgil and Franklin.

The family will receive visitors Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM at Metcalf Funeral Home, 1801 East White Oak Terrace, Conroe followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM at the same
