Alton Floyd “BIG AL” Allen was born May 28th 1929 in Many Louisiana to John Tryon and Amanda Massey Allen. His family moved to Old London, Texas to work the East Texas oil boom in the early 1930’s. Al attended school at New London, Texas and was present during the New London School explosion in 1937 that killed over 295 students and teachers. He became club champion of multiple courses and played competitive matches with the likes of Miller Barber, Homero Blancas, Jackie Cupit, Sandy Lyle and Don January. In his later years Al missed qualifying for a senior tour event by a single stroke and was able to shoot his age into his eighties. Respected by everyone, Al was a man of unquestioned integrity. Always striving to help others, he never failed to ask “Is there anything I can do for you?” A dedicated husband, father and patient teacher, Al supported Jerry with love and kindness and guided his three sons to be true gentlemen in his likeness.
