W. Glenn Cloninger Sr.

Born June 2, 1921, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late George Washington Cloninger and Etta Mae Moser Cloninger.

Glenn was self-employed and retired from Cloninger Cabinet Shop. A Veteran of World War II, he was a Staff Sargent with the U.S. Army Air Corps, 71st Fighter Squadron, Air Offensive Europe. He was awarded a Distinguished Unit Badge with two Oak Leaf Clusters, an EAMET Campaign with seven Bronze Service Stars, and a Good Conduct Medal.

A member of St. Mark's ELCA Lutheran Church in Claremont, he served as a Past President of the church, an elder, and a deacon. He also served as Past President of the Lutheran Brotherhood Men of the Church. He also served on the Board of Directors of The Lutherock Ministries in Newland, NC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Clyde Cloninger, Franklin Cloninger, Boyce Cloninger; and sister Marjorie Starnes.

Survivors include his wife Pauline "Polly" Martin Cloninger of the home; sons Walter "Glenn" Cloninger, Jr. and wife Jean of Catawba, and Charles Jeffrey "Jeff" Cloninger of Boone; one grandson Reverend Jerome Cloninger and wife Kimberly of China Grove; three granddaughters Tiffany Caudill and husband Scott of Conover, Hannah Wetherill and husband Mark of Johnson City, TN, and Andrea Cloninger of Atlanta, GA; three great-granddaughters Beth, Aimee, and Gabriella Cloninger of China Grove; four great-grandsons Jeremiah and Ezekiel Cloninger of China Grove, Quentin Caudill of Conover, and Jack Wetherill of Johnson City, TN; brothers Carlos Cloninger of Sparks, NV, Philip Cloninger and wife Mary of Conover; sister-in-law Eva Cloninger of Claremont; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at St. Mark's ELCA Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Gary Haddock officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites conducted by Members of American Legion Post 16.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, prior to the service in the Family Life Center at the church.
