Born September 12, 1945, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late William Henry Ikerd and Katherine Novella Stamey. Normally a man of few words, Ted preferred letting his actions convey his feelings, caring, and compassion for family and friends.
A plumber for 30 years with the Catawba County School System, in retirement, Ted along with his wife Kay built up and operated a very successful nursery business for 26 years. Customers loved that Ted and Kay were so friendly, took time to get to know them, and happily shared knowledge and care tips for the plants. Their nursery's plants are still thriving at homes and businesses all over the area. Ted's mind was always turning over ideas and his body could not stand to be idle. Even as he ran a thriving nursery, he developed a love for rebuilding trucks. With the aid of several friends and his older son, Ted rebuilt dozens of vehicles, including 4x4s and dump trucks. As his skill grew, he experimented further, creating a number of unique and highly custom trucks including a pair of Toyota pickups powered by 5.0-liter V8 Ford Mustang engines.
In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Kay Francis Eckard Icard; an infant son, Earl William Icard; a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia I Capps and Theron (T.K.) Capps; and brothers Jack Lewis Icard and Thomas Nelson Icard Sr.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Ted Icard of Conover and Jeremy Scott Icard and wife, Heather Phung of Concord; granddaughters, Larissa, Michaela, and Amber Icard; grandsons, Phillip and Aaron Icard; a great grandson, Michael S Herbert; sisters, Jeanette I Hefner of Hickory and Dorris I Bullard and husband Danny of Newton; sister-in-law, Brenda Eckard; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
