Larry attended Newton-Conover High School, was a Veteran of the US Army, and retired from E.R. Carpenter several years ago. His outgoing personality and contagious sense of humor attracted many friends. His passion in life was his love of music – rock, country, bluegrass and this was evidenced by the fact that he played guitar in bands from the time he was a teenager until recent years. It was perfectly normal for Larry to break into song when the mood hit him. Larry also had an interest in unique plants and as a hobby; he painted and created one-of-a-kind flowerpots for members of the family. He had very special relationships with his nieces and nephews, and he was a very loving uncle. Larry showed them good times and special experiences that will never be forgotten.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 30 years, Jock Simmons, of the home; sister, Pam Tallent (Jim) of Newton; sister-in-law, Kim LeBlanc (Michael) of Raleigh; brother-in-law, Todd Taylor (Jennifer) of Iron Station; nieces, Carmen Houston (Bobby) of Newton, Taylor LeBlanc; nephews, Andrew Taylor, Zachary Phillips, and Benjamin Phillips; step-daughter, Jessica Cale (Jason) of Taylorsville; step-grandchildren, Abigail and Christopher as well as several cousins.
A Celebration of Life Service for Larry will be held at 3pm on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at Drum Funeral Home, 509 First Avenue South, Conover, 28613 with Pastor Cory Smith officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.
