John Benjamin Wofford, MD., age 85, of Conover, NC, went to his Heavenly Home on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Ben was born February 7, 1929 to the late Robert Benjamin Wofford and Enola Cole of Oak Ridge, Louisiana.
Dr. Ben was a man of principal and integrity and made no compromise. He felt his duty was to mankind. He entered medicine to truly help people in need.
Dr. Ben loved life and his family. Dr. Ben married his true love and dearest friend and supporter Martha Jean Quillin on June 6, 1954 and what a remarkable journey their life has been. Dr. Ben was very proud of the fact that he dropped out of school in high school to join the Navy and was part of WWII and was later recalled to take part in the Korean War. He later received his GED and went on to receive a bachelor degree from University of Tennessee. It was later and with a 5 year old child and a pregnant wife that he decided to return to Medical School. He practiced medicine in several different states ending up in 1976 in Conover, NC. Dr. Ben was well known in this area for helping those that fell through the cracks and needed help. He loved the mountains and on a weekly basis hiked to the top of Beacon Heights and at 85 did this in 18 minutes. Dr. Ben truly was concerned for his patients and their wellbeing. He loved to write and published 5 books. A great man, a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandparent and great grandparent he will be missed by many. Dr. Ben’s family carries a great concern to the people that had a large part of his heart, his patients. Jean cherishes a beautiful memory of being told everyday of how much he loved her.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Wofford, Robert Wofford; and sister, Catherine McClintock.
Left to cherish his memories are wife of 60 years, Jean Wofford, son, Jeffrey Bryan Wofford and wife, Jennifer, of Newton, NC and their children Jessica and husband, Christopher Koenig and their daughter Stella Grace. William Jared Wofford and wife Denise, Dr. Ben’s youngest son James Benjamin Wofford, of CA memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at First United Methodist Church of Conover. Rev. Michael Moree will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at First United Methodist Church of Conover.
