Jack Oley Murray, age 86, of Claremont, NC, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2013, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton, NC. Born October 11, 1926, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Roland Thornton “R.T.” Murray and Floye Little Murray.
Jack was a lifelong member of Mt. View United Methodist Church in Claremont, NC, where he was a former trustee and had served on numerous committees. He had worked in the construction industry as a superintendent and was a former charter member of the Balls Creek Lions Club. Jack was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Pacific during World War II.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha M. Hill.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Carolyn Lee Murray of the home; son & daughter-in-law, Scottie & Sandra Murray of Catawba, NC; daughter & son-in-law, Patty & Louis James of Morganton, NC; grandchildren, Traci Vasquez, Louis James, II, Clay Howard, and Bethany Howard; great-grandchildren, Madison Kanupp, Casey Kanupp, A.J. Vasquez, Carter Howard, and Carson Howard; brothers, James Murray & wife Helen of Catawba, NC, Don Murray of Monroe, NC, and Ted Murray of Monroe, NC.
A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at Mt. View United Methodist Church. Rev. Richard Irwin will officiate and burial with military rites by American Legion Post #16 will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening at Mt. View United Methodist Church from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
