Charles “Charlie” Eugene Pope, age 70, of Denver, NC, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Sherrills Ford, NC. Born September 1, 1947, in Catawba County, NC, he was the son of Glenna Mae Schell Pope of Claremont, NC, and the late Forrest Eugene Pope.
Charlie was a lifelong member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Claremont, NC, where he had served on the church council. He was a Founding Partner of Catawba Truck Rental and Cargo Transporters and was a former member of the Claremont Fire Department, where he had served as Fire Chief and for over 25 years as a volunteer firefighter. He was a former recipient of the Catawba County Firefighter of the year award. Charlie was a member of Riverside Masonic Lodge #606 in Catawba, NC, and was a member of the Oasis Shriners. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in Korea during the Vietnam War.
In addition to his father, Charlie was preceded in death by a grandson, Alec Sigmon, and a brother, Tony A. Pope.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years, Connie Sheehan Pope; daughter, Melissa “Missy” Pope and wife Amy Baker of Denver, NC; son, Michael Pope and wife Christy of Claremont, NC; mother, Glenna Mae Schell Pope of Claremont, NC; grandchildren, Micaela Pope, Jessica Sigmon, and Julia Sigmon; niece, Tina P. Simmons; and nephew, John Pope.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 12:00 PM at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Claremont, NC, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Haddock officiating. The burial will follow in the St. Marks Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the Family Life Center of St. Marks Lutheran Church and at other times at the residence of Michael Pope, 2690 Gettysburg Place, Claremont, NC, 28610.
