Born the son of the late Malcolm and Sallie Smyre on March 24, 1937, in Newton, NC, Bill graduated from Newton-Conover High School in 1955. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Science, Pharmacy, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1963, where he finished at the top of his class. He began his employment career as the pharmacist of Newton Rexall Drug in 1963. He met his future wife, Patricia Ann Huffman, at the doctor's office where she worked, and they were married on September 1, 1963, at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Conover. He later worked as a pharmacist and manager at Cornwell Drugs in Newton, Revco Drug and CVS in Conover, and he retired while working for Walker's Pharmacy in Newton.
Bill spent the later years of his life frequently traveling with his wife and visiting all fifty states of the U.S. He greatly enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed watching UNC-Chapel Hill sporting events on television as well as in person, especially football and basketball.
Bill always had a strong religious faith and kept himself actively involved in the church. He was baptized and confirmed at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, and he later moved his membership to Beth Eden Lutheran Church, and then transferred his membership to Concordia Lutheran Church where he had active membership until the time of his passing.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; his father- and mother-in-law, Cecil and Louetta Huffman; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins and his beloved dog, Pepper.
Bill is survived by his son, Jeff; his daughter, Lynette Smyre Roll, and son-in-law, Ken Roll, of Newton; his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Lee Smyre, of Greer, S.C.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Pastor Michael Geml will preside a memorial service at Concordia Lutheran Church on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 11:00 am. The family receiving will precede the service from 10:00 am to 10:45 am. A private burial will be held before the memorial service.
