He was born on May 16, 1932, in Manchester, Kentucky, to the late Hugh and Hilda Jordan Smith. On January 5, 1951, he was married to Sallie Ann (Williams) Smith, she preceded him in death on January 7, 2002. Vernon was a hard worker all of his life, he farmed for several years and retired from D & M, and its predecessors White Consolidated Inc. after thirty years of service. He was most happy when he was outside mowing his yard and working in the garden.
Vernon is survived by his three sons: Steve Smith, Randy Smith, and Phillip (Gwen) Smith all of Connersville; three daughters: Hilda Grubbs of Laurel, Amanda Smith of Connersville, and Rachel Wilson of Katy Texas. He will also be remembered by his fourteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and his two great-great grandchildren, with one due in November.
He is also preceded in death by his parents: Hugh and Hilda Smith; his wife: Sallie; his son: Jeff Smith, who passed away February 2021; five brothers: Ovie, Denver, Earl, Cecil and Herchel Smith; and a son in-law: David Wilson.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00p.m., Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Showalter Blackwell Long, Myers Chapel, Connersville with Pastor Mal Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at Dale Cemetery. Friends may gather at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m., until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society in Vernon’s honor.
