Grace was born February 26, 1908, in Gates, West Virginia, one of twelve children of Henry Lewis and Clarinda Shires Canterbury. She attended school in West Virginia and was married in October of 1946 in Staunton, Virginia to Charles Walker Young. They lived in Connersville for most of their adult life. Prior to her marriage, she had owned and operated a beauty salon in Craigsville, Virginia. Grace was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years. She liked gardening, canning and was an accomplished seamstress.
Grace is survived by her daughter: Carole Byrd of Connersville; her granddaughter: Shawna Daras and her husband, J.D. of Zionsville; two great-grandchildren: Jake and Autumn Daras; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her husband who died in March of 1978; five sisters: Florence Cook, Annie Wickline, Laura Wickline, Mary Halterman and Nellie Baker; an infant sister; and six brothers: Walter, Lewis, Lama, Eugene, Crockett and Brown Canterbury.
Public graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Dale Cemetery with Pastor John Reynolds of Calvary Baptist Church officiating followed by interment. There will be no public visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary Baptist Food Pantry.
