Thomas J. Higgins, 76, of Valley Cottage New York passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29th surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Kathleen (Dolan), Thomas leaves behind his sons, Thomas (Amy) and Colin (April), his grandchildren, Emma, Aidan, Shane, Owen and Gavin, his sisters, Anne Petz, Maureen Higgins, and Kathy Ashford, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Eileen Higgins and his parents, Anne and Thomas Higgins.
Thomas was born in the Bronx, New York and attended Holy Family Elementary School and St. Helena Business High School, Class of 1962. As a young boy he never missed a Little League game and as an adult was always ready to play on any softball teams that would have him. After High School, Tom worked many jobs before joining the New York Police Department. Tom spent most of his police career in the 44 Precinct and also worked on the FBI task force. After 21 years he retired out of the 19th Detective squad to spend time with sons and family. He became a fixture at all of his sons Nyack HS sporting events. It was around this time that Tom gave up softball and discovered golf. A sport he enjoyed even more.
Tom met and married Kathleen Dolan in June 1971. Together they enjoyed time traveling and spending winters in Jensen Beach, Florida with great friends. They enjoyed the simple things in life together with much love for one another.
Tom also worked in security and as an executive chauffeur for Merrill Lynch and retired from there in 2009. The best part of Tom’s day was when he met a new or old friend and had a long chat with them. There was never a child, teenager or adult that Tom did not make feel welcomed and special.
Although Tom faced many health challenges during the latter part of his life, he never complained or gave up fighting. He enjoyed every moment he spent with his five grandchildren. They will always remember Pop as the best card player ever.
