Ralph and Theresa (Fusco) Acampora in Riverdale The Bronx, New York in the house he eventually grew up in. Formally of Orangeburg, New York and Garfield, New Jersey, John peacefully passed away while residing at The Buckingham at Norwood Nursing Home under the lovely care of Amedisys Hospice and caring nurses of The Buckingham at Norwood.
John leaves three (3) surviving children: Joseph (Theresa) Acampora, Anne Marie DaSilva and Kathryn (Nickolas) Falcone. Eldest son John Matthew proceeded him in 1996. John is also survived by his siblings Marguerite Acampora, Ralph & RoseMary Acampora and Edith Woods. John leaves many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Just last month John became a great great-grandfather for the first time. John with his timeless humor and wit plus his awesome people personality wherever John was, he touched many of their hearts and left his mark on so many people throughout the course of his life and will be greatly missed by all. John leaves countless friends and acquaintances he has met over the years. John was lovingly nicknamed “Pops” by his new found international friends when John attended The Annual Jack Daniel’s BBQ in Lynchburg, Tennessee for his 80th birthday.
John graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School Bronx, NY. John married the love of his life Mary Ellen Gilfoy in 1956. Mary Ellen proceeded John in 2004. Before entering the Army, John worked along with his father Ralph and two uncles John and Tony in the family business “New Heights Storage” located in Manhattan, NY John served proudly in The US Army 82nd Airborne.John was discharged honorably in 1957. His trade while in the Army was being a printer which he used briefly after returning back to civilian life.
Upon John’s discharge from the Army, the newlyweds settled in the Kingsbridge section of The Bronx before eventually moving to Orangeburg, New York in 1965 to raise his growing young family. During this time, John was a very successful antiques dealer who along with his partner Mike Amitor bought and sold all types of antiques until his partner’s sudden death in the early 70’s. John changed careers and became a proud member of The International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 455 and Local 814 which he retired from in the early 90’s. John relocated to Garfield, NJ to enjoy his retirement years.
John’s nickname growing up was affectionately known as “Little Ack” He enjoyed traveling to Florida to visit his favorite first cousin John “Big Ack” and his family.John was an avid reader of books, newspapers, periodicals. John loved to keep a daily watchful eye on Wall St’s “Dow Jones” on Fox News. Needless to say, one of John’s favorite shows was “Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser”.
He was a great big fan of Italian singer Jimmy Roselli. John would listen to Mr. Roselli constantly singing standards in Neapolitan Italian. Even in his final days, John was listening to Mr. Roselli sing. John loved going to see him whenever he was in concert in the Tri state area. John also a big lover of 50’s music. John was surprisingly even a very good dancer tearing up the dance floor with his favorite dance partner Mary Ellen. John will be greatly missed by everyone touched by John. John was a giving, loving, generous person. John wouldn’t think twice about dropping everything to help you out.
Because of the Pandemic, services will be private plus limited to a small number of family followed by a graveside service that will be performed at Calvary Cemetery Queens, NY where John will be buried alongside his love of his life Mary Ellen.
